Merriam Theater

The Merriam Theater is Philadelphia’s most continuous Broadway show roadhouse theatre. The Theater is located on the South Board Street corridor, known as the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States and was originally built by Shubert Organization in 1918. In 1972 the theater came under the ownership of the Academy of Music and then just the University of the Arts. It is also associated with the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
In 1918 the building was designed for theatre for live performance theater by the Shubert Organization, two brothers Lee and J.J. Shubert, theatrical producers and a founding member of the Theatrical Syndicate. The brothers set out to build a theater memorializing their brother, Sam, who had died several years earlier in a railroad accident. Two theaters were built one in Philadelphia and one in New York. Starting in 1986 it has been renovated for modern staging and in 1991, the theater was renamed and dedicated to John W. Merriam, a local entrepreneur, who was active on the Board of Directors of the University of the Arts for many years.
